Volunteers in Medicine Seeking New Location
For 17 years, Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) has provided free healthcare to thousands of Jacksonville’s working uninsured at the corner of Ocean and Duval Streets. Now, they are looking for a new home.
“It is an exciting time for us,” said Jennifer Ryan, VIM CEO. “This location has served us well, but in actuality we are busting at the seams. We are looking for more space to serve more patients, educate the community, and serve in partnerships with other community organizations.”
VIM believes this move continues their legacy of providing free healthcare for the working uninsured with consistency and dependability. Even during the transition, VIM will honor this legacy by serving patients without pause. Patients can count on having access to care on the days and times they have come to expect it.
Patients can also expect a larger space and new location that will make them feel dignified and encouraged to continue their care. VIM plans to add rooms for nutrition and wellness classes, group education, as well as one-to-one education. Health advocates will be incorporated into the design of the new clinic as well, assisting patients on-site to locate other community resources.
“The community need for VIM's services is greater now more than ever,” said Board President Ann Carey. “A new and larger facility will give us opportunities to better serve our patients and their families while broadening support services through collaboration and partnerships with other organizations.”
While a building has not yet been identified, VIM is looking for a long-term location within five miles of their current site located in Downtown Jacksonville. Ryan emphasized the need for the building to be accessible to all who want to make it their medical home. “It is so important to be able to provide our patients with the same accessibility and opportunity to address them holistically, having a positive impact on their families and ability to work.”
Ryan is unsure as to whether they will be renting or buying but knows there will be naming opportunities for donors. For now, they welcome the support and advice of the community.
