Volunteers in Medicine is a nonprofit that is built completely around volunteers. A staff of 12 paid employees supports roughly 200 volunteers who come to Volunteer in Medicine every year to treat the working uninsured for free. Nurses Week takes place every May 6-12th to recognize nurses all over the country!
Volunteers in Medicine Expands Mental Health Services
Volunteers in Medicine plans to expand its mental health services for the working uninsured thanks to a recent multi-year grant from The Jim Moran Foundation. In the wake of the pandemic, several other health crises are emerging. Near the top of the list is untreated mental health illness and the unmet need for mental health services.
Millions of Volunteers Honored During National Volunteer Week
Volunteers in Medicine is a nonprofit that is built completely around volunteers. A staff of 12 paid employees supports roughly 200 volunteers who come to Volunteer in Medicine every year to treat the working uninsured for free. National Volunteer Week, which takes place between April 17 and April 23, is when those volunteers and their contributions are formally acknowledged.

They say there are no guarantees in life, but in the case of ophthalmologist Dr. Howard Rose, the patients and staff at Volunteers in Medicine would beg to differ. Each Tuesday morning for more than 12 years, Dr. Rose made the sojourn from his beaches home to Volunteers in Medicine’s downtown clinic.

Volunteers in Medicine volunteer Barbara Potter was awarded the prestigious Ivy Summerlee Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award at a special luncheon and awards ceremony attended by more than 200 guests on March 24th at the main library in downtown Jacksonville.

HandsOn Jacksonville, celebrating its 44th year this year, honored volunteers on Monday, April 24 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to at the Jessie Ball duPont Center. The Celebrate GOOD VIP Awards Dinner was the kick-off to their Celebrate GOOD Festival and in conjunction with National Volunteer Week.
Laine MacWilliam
For nearly 8 years, Laine MacWilliam has been providing the priceless donation of her time as a volunteer in our clinic. For seven years, she volunteered every Thursday, and continued to volunteer two days each month after taking on a full-time job as a realtor. Next month will mark her 8 year anniversary of her start date.
Dixie Murphy
Dixie Murphy has spent her Thursdays for the last five years volunteering at the Volunteers In Medicine prescription drug dispensary, working with the clinic’s volunteer doctors and nurses on behalf of patients in need of inexpensive medications.

“They have been really have been wonderful,” she said of the Volunteers In Medicine doctors and staff. “Without them I would have been in a world of hurt because I could not have gotten the treatment I needed.”
